About Us & NDRR Membership

Our club is based in Barnstaple. We meet at the Tarka Tennis Centre and use their facilities - meeting area, bar, showers etc.

Our aim

To enjoy the sport of running with an emphasis on enjoyment, that is not to say that we don't take the sport seriously. We recognise not everyone wants to be involved in competitive races, but looks to running to provide a basic level of fitness, and a social scene to go with it. For those who are competitive, coaching, competitive training and encouragement is given to ensure club members performances are enhanced.

Club Membership

Will it cost me a fortune to join?

Membership costs £20.00 and last for a year from the date you join. We only accept online membership applications - please do not use the old paper based membership forms - if you need help with the IT please approach one of the committee members. We will be bringing an internet enabled laptop to the club around April time when most memberships are due for renewal to assist people. There is a £1.50 online processing fee.

In addition new members must purchase a club vest at the ridiculously cheap price of £12.00 - this is subsidised by the club.

You may opt into EA membership if you choose, this costs £13.00 per year.

Why should I join?

Apart from the fact that you might enjoy company instead of always running on your own, benefits that come with membership include:

  • Discount at sports retailers on production of your club card (the cost of membership can be recuperated on buying a pair of running shoes)
  • Organised events throughout the year both social and races
  • We host a number of highly regarded races throughout the year - see our races section for more details
  • Organised training to suit your pace- although we are a club with fast runnners, the majority of our runners are club runners and enjoy socialising as much as running. We welcome all speeds and all abilities, you will not be too slow
  • We offer an organised couch to 5k program
  • Reduced entry fees for any race that is organised under UKA rules
  • Opportunities to win the club places for the London Marathon (club rules apply)
  • Option to run in events that allow only UKA affiliated runners, such as the Westward Cross Country League.

The club, in addition to encouraging members to enjoy their running, sees its members competing on a regular basis in organised events held throughout the South West. The type of event varies in distance from Fun Run or 10 Km to marathon, and includes road races, off-road (multi terrain) and cross-country.

When & where do we meet?

The club meets every Tuesday night at 7.00 p.m. at the Tarka Tennis Centre, Barnstaple. This is just beyond the North Devon Leisure Centre - i.e. pass the Leisure Centre on your left and continue straight on for a few hundred metres.

There are also a training sessions on Thursday evenings, again at 7.00 p.m. at the Tarka Tennis Centre.

How active are we?

The club organises its own events such as...

A winter series of 'handicap' 10K races, which sees every entrant having a equal chance of winning.

Summer one mile time trials, which is not just for those speedsters but also for those who just want to measure their progress.

Summer 5K Races in Rock Park.

The summer relays with clubs based at Bideford, South Molton, Torrington, Minehead and NDAC.

Occasional organised trips to other races. 2007 saw a group going to race in Cyprus. For more local trips, coaches are put on for when enough members have entered a particular event.

Forty members travelled to Weston for the Christmas Caper 10Km race. Family members are always welcome to join in with trips.

History of the club

The club has been in existence for more than 20 years.

In the 1980s, at the height of the marathon boom, the club was known as North Devon Marathon Club. Membership for this year reached just short of 130, with a near equal split of men and women. Both ends of the age spectrum are represented, from youth to the retired.

The club is affiliated to the South of England AAA and the Devon AAA and draws many benefits from this status.

The club is run by the membership with the nomination and election of committee members taking place through the annual general meetings.
